Advisory Council Meetings

The Advisory Council meets with the Commissioner, Deputy Commissioner, and MDIFW staff regularly to provide information and advice concerning the administration of the Department. The Council meets each December and May, as well as throughout the year. All regular and special meetings of the advisory council are open to the public.

Working Groups

MDIFW is forming Working Groups focused on public access to privately owned lands, Swan Island in Richmond, and the classification of and access of public records. The public is invited to attend all working group meetings.

Public Access to Privately Owned Lands Working Group

Legislative Resolve 82, "Directing the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife and the Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry to Examine Issues Related to Public Access to Privately Owned Lands." The working group will submit a final report to the Legislature with recommendations and any potential legislation by February 15, 2026.

Upcoming Meetings:

  • Thursday, November 20 from 9am – noon at the MDIFW Heaquarters, 353 Water Street, Augusta.

There will be an opportunity for public comment at the end of each meeting.

Swan Island Working Group

Legislative Resolve H.P. 636- L.D. 976, "To Establish a Working Group to Facilitate Public Access and Resilience Planning for Swan Island." The working group will submit a final report with recommendations to the Legislature in January 2026.

The group is made up of representatives from MDIFW, Maine Department of Economic and Community Development, Governors Office of Policy Innovation and the Future, Department of Agriculture, Conservation, and Forestry, Town of Richmond, and the Friends of Swan Island.

Upcoming Meetings:

Wednesday, November 5 from 2-5pm at the MDIFW Headquarters, 353 Water Street, Augusta -- The meeting will focus on viable transportation options, historic preservation needs, roles of each participating entity, and potential funding sources.

Public Records Working Group

Legislative Resolve H.P. 66 - L.D. 101, “to Convene a Working Group to Examine the Classification of and Access to Public Records Maintained by Certain State Agencies.” The working group will submit a report that includes the working group's findings and recommendations, including suggested legislation, to the legislature by January 14, 2026.

The group is made up of representatives from MDIFW, the Rights to Know Advisory Committee, the Secretary of State, Department of Marine Resources, and Department of Public Safety.
