Homeowner Complaint Comparison
The center pages of this brochure show information about the number of homeowner insurance complaints received by the Bureau of Insurance from consumers in 2008. This information is provided as a tool for you to use when you compare homeowner insurance companies.
Other important information to consider when comparing insurance companies includes policy prices, what the policy covers, what the policy doesn’t cover (policy exclusions), and the financial strength of the company.
What does the table tell me?
The table shows the following about each insurer:
the amount of direct premium that was written in 2008;
the number of complaints received from consumers against that insurer during 2008;
and
a complaint index that compares the share of complaints to the share of premiums written in 2008. We
have also included the complaint index for 2007.
Why use a complaint index?
With a complaint index you can see at a glance how a homeowner insurer compares to the average.
A Complaint Index of 1 is average.
Less than 1 is better than average.
Greater than 1 is worse than average.
Not all companies selling homeowner insurance in Maine are listed in this brochure. Some companies do not write enough insurance in Maine to show meaningful information. This brochure includes only companies that either:
have 5 or more complaints received against them
or
collected premiums for homeowner policies sold in Maine that represent at least 1% of all the 2008 homeowner insurance premium collected by all insurers who sell homeowner policies in Maine.

A complaint index of 1 is average, less than 1 is better than average, greater than 1 is worse than average.
NOTE: Many companies are part of an insurance “group.” Some of the companies included in these groups are listed in the chart, however, if your company is not listed on the chart, look at the lists on the following pages to see if it is part of a group.
