Electrical Permit Application Form

32 MRSA §1102-B Permits And Inspections Of Commercial Buildings

No electrical equipment may be installed or altered unless the person making the installation first obtains a permit from the Electricians' Examining Board, or towns/cities that have their own electrical inspector. Exceptions to the State requirements would be:

1. Single-family dwellings;

  • Certification is needed on single-family dwellings;

  • Permits are required for temporary services to build one family dwellings;

2. The electrical work and equipment employed in connection with the construction, installation, operation, repair or maintenance of any utility by a utility corporation in rendering its authorized service or in any way incidental thereto;

3. Minor repair work, including the replacement of lamps, fuses lighting fixtures, switches and sockets, the installation and repair of outlets, radio and other low voltage equipment and the repair of entrance service equipment;

4. Installations or alterations for which a permit and inspection are required by municipal resolution or ordinance under Title 30-A, section 4173;

5. Any electrical equipment and work, including construction, installation, operation, maintenance and repair in or about industrial or manufacturing facilities; and

6. Any electrical equipment and work, including construction, installation, operation, maintenance and repair in, on, or about other properties, equipment or buildings, residential or of any other kind, owned or operated by a person engaged in industrial or manufacturing operations provided that the work is done under the supervision of an electrical engineer or master electrician in the employ of that person.

INSTRUCTIONS

When applying for a permit for commercial work, follow these steps:

    1. Complete this form and hit the submit key.

    2. You will be notified by e-mail of your permit number within two business days.

    3. A permit will only be issued to a Master or Limited Electrician.

    4. If the Board determines the installations or alterations planned are in compliance with all applicable statutes and rules, it shall issue a permit.

    5. The actual permit will be mailed to the Master or Limited Electrician. The power company will want to see the permit number before the power can be connected.

    6. When the installations have been completed the designated inspector must be contacted so an inspection of the work can be arranged. (Please note telephone number.)
