Audiologist

Description

"Audiologist" means an individual who practices Audiology and who by virtue of academic and practical training presents himself/herself to the public by any title or description of services incorporating the words Audiologist, Hearing Clinician, Hearing Therapist or any similar title or description of service.

REQUIREMENTS

To be eligible for licensure by the Board as an Audiologist a person shall possess at least a master's degree or its equivalent, as determined by the Board, which is consistent with the requirements for American Speech and Hearing Association Certificate of Clinical Competency in Speech Pathology or Audiology. The board may establish the requirements for academic coursework, supervised clinical practicum, supervised professional employment, and written examination. All applicants must submit the following:

  • Application for Licensure;
  • Official transcript issued directly to the Board from the issuing University or College indicating a master's degree or equivalent coursework;
  • Evidence of having completed 375 clock hours of supervised clinical observation and clinical practicum.
  • Evidence of Completion of Clinical Fellowship Year or equivalent supervised experience;
  • A passing score on the examination administered by Praxis (passing score 600);
  • Resume of Continued Professional Experience in Audiology to include evidence of current continuing education;
  • Payment of a separate $8. fee for a criminal records (SBI) check.
  • Payment of Licensure and Application fees

  • This license renews biennially on February 28.
REQUIREMENTS
  • A late fee of $10. is assessed for licenses renewed after the license expiration date.
  • A person who submits an application for renewal more than 90 days after the license expiration date is subject to all requirements governing new applicants and is required to reapply with an original license application, documentation and fees.
  • Renewal applications are mailed approximately 30 days prior to the license expiration date. It is the licensee's responsibility to keep the Board informed of the current license address and/or to see that the license is renewed.
  • CONTINUING EDUCATION Documentation of 25 hours of board approved continuing education must be submitted by October 31,2001.

Speech-Language Pathologist

Description

"Speech-Language Pathologist" means an individual who practices Speech-Language Pathology and who by virtue of academic and practical training presents the individual to the public by any title or description of services incorporating the words Speech Pathologist, Speech Therapist, Speech Correctionist, Speech Clinician, Language Pathologist, Language Therapist, Logopedist, Communicologist, Voice Therapist, Voice Pathologist or any similar title or description of service.

REQUIREMENTS

Speech-Language Pathology Aide (Registration)

Description

"Speech-Language Pathology Aide" means an individual who meets minimum qualifications that the board may establish for Speech-Language Pathology Aides, which are less than those qualifications established as necessary for licensure as a Speech-Language Pathologist and less than those established by the Department of Education for school personnel, and who works under the supervision of a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist.

REQUIREMENTS
  • All applicants for registration as a Speech-Language Pathology Aide must submit the following:
  • Application for Registration;
  • Documentation demonstrating two (2) years of post-secondary education;
  • A statement of specific clinical services to be provided under the direction of the supervising Speech-Language Pathologist;
  • A statement of settings in which those services would be provided;
  • statement of a formal training plan aimed at assuring that the individual possesses the necessary competencies to provide the services described in Chapter 3, Section 1(D) and (E);
  • A statement of a formal supervisory plan. Training and supervision of the Aide must be provided by the registering licensed Speech-Language Pathologist. The letter must attest to, and maintain compliance with, the following minimal supervisory criteria:
    1. Direct, on-site observations of the Aide must be made for the first 20 clock hours of direct client contact following training; and
    2. Direct, on-site observations of each client served by the Aide at least once every two weeks.
  • Payment of a $8. fee for a criminal records (SBI) check. Please make your checks payable to: Maine State Treasurer.

NOTE:

  • Completed application forms must be submitted for board approval prior to the date of first employment of the Aide and/or Assistant under the supervision of the registering professional.
  • All applications are reviewed by the Board. All applicants will be notified in writing as to the disposition of their application.
  • Persons making application on or after October1, 1999 must demonstrate 2 years of post-secondary education. Any currently-registered Speech-Language Pathology Aide may continue to practice until January 1, 2005, thereafter, he or she must fulfill all requirements applicable to new applicants for registration as Speech-Language Pathology Assistants.

Speech-Language Pathology Assistant (Registration)

Description

"Speech-Language Pathology Assistant" means an individual who meets minimum qualifications that the board may establish for Speech-Language Pathology Assistants, which are less than those qualifications established for licensure, but which must include an Associate's Degree or its equivalent as determined by the board, in the field of Communication Disorders.

REQUIREMENTS

All applicants for registration as a Speech-Language Pathology Assistants must submit the following:

  • Application for Registration;
  • Documentation demonstrating a minimum of an associates degree (60 credit hours) in a Speech-Language Pathology Assistant training program, or an equivalent course of study with a major emphasis in the area of Speech-Language Pathology. Please refer to Board rules Chapter 3, Section 2(B)(1) for further clarification;
  • Documentation demonstrating completion of a practicum under the supervision of a Board licensed Speech-Language Pathologist;
  • Documentation demonstrating passing a proficiency evaluation administered by an associates degree program or possess a support personnel credential from the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA); and
  • Payment of a $8.00 Fee for a criminal records (SBI) check.

Temporary Speech-Language Pathologist Or Audiologist

Description

"Temporary License" - An applicant who fulfills all the requirements for licensure except professional employment or examination, may apply to the board for a temporary license. Upon receiving an application, accompanied by the fee, the board shall issue a temporary license, which entitles the applicant to practice Speech-Language Pathology or Audiology under supervision while completing the requirements for licensure. A temporary license may not be issued by the board under this section unless the applicant shows to the satisfaction of the board that the applicant is, or will be, supervised and trained by a person who holds a license or the Certificate of Clinical Competency of the American Speech and Hearing Association in the appropriate specialty.

The Board of Examiners on Speech Pathology and Audiology was established to license speech pathologists and audiologists with appropriate credentials and to help assure the availability of high quality speech pathology and audiology service to communicatively handicapped people in the State of Maine.

The primary responsibilities of the Board is to evaluate qualifications of and examine applicants; grant licenses to those who meet board requirements, investigate complaints, and take disciplinary action against licensees.
