Description
"Conditional
License" indicates the licensee is completing a required internship
period under certain conditions to progress to another level of
licensure. A licensee must be licensed at this level while accruing
required internship experience. This is an entry level requiring
BS/BA and a LSW conditional must obtain four hours per month of
supervision.

Description
"Licensed
Social Worker" (LSW) is a person who has received a license as
a Social Worker from the board. A LSW may: Conduct basic data
gathering of records and specific life issues of individuals,
groups, couples and families; assess the above data, formulate
and implement a plan to achieve specific goals related to specific
life issues; serve as an advocate for clients or groups of clients
for the purpose of achieving specific goals relating to specific
life issues; refer clients to other professional services; plan,
manage, direct or coordinate social services; participate in training
and education of social work students; and supervise other LSWs,
other professionals practicing related professions and paraprofessionals
engaged in related activities. A LSW with a BSW and two (2) years
of supervised postgraduate experience may provide consultation
required by the LSW Conditional licenses to those licensees

degree who has completed the required LSW consultation
(Verification of Consultation Form). This consultation
must be concurrent with 3200 hours of social work employment
occurring in not fewer than 2 years nor more than 4 years;
- Documentation
of successful passage of the required examination (Basic).
Documented proof may be in form of a copy of the results
given to you on the day of the examination;
- Three
current letters of professional recommendation (within
the past year), two of which must be from licensed social
workers at any level of licensure from any state;

Description
"Licensed
Master Social Worker" (LMSW) is a person who has received a license
as a Master Social Worker from the board and only performs non-clinical
functions. A LMSW may perform all of the functions of the LSW
License, engage in administration, research, consultation, social
planning and teaching related to the functions of social work;
engage in non-clinical private practice; and provide consultation
required by the LSW and LSW Conditional Licenses.

- Licensed Master Social Worker, Conditional Clinical

Description
This license
is for Master Social Workers who are engaged in clinical practice
who have not yet completed the consultation hours required for
LCSW (independant licensure).
"Licensed
Master Social Worker, Conditional (Clinical)" means a person who
has received an MSW Conditional (Clinical) license from the board.
This licensee may perform all of the functions of the LMSW license;
engage in psychosocial evaluation, including diagnosis and treatment
of mental illness and emotional disorders, with required consultation;
and provide clinical consultation to LSWs, Social Work students,
other professionals practicing related professions and paraprofessionals
engaging in related activities. A LMSW, Conditional (Clinical)
must receive four (4) hours a month of consultation (no more than
25% in a group setting) by a LCSW while practicing social work
in a clinical setting. A LMSW Conditional (Clinical) may not engage
in private clinical practice unless permitted under 32 MRSA, Chapter
83, Section 7053, subsection 1.

Description
"Licensed
Clinical Social Worker" (LCSW) is a person who has received a
license as a Clinical Social Worker from the board, and may engage
in Clinical Social Work Practice: The professional application
of social work theory and methods to the evaluation, diagnosis,
treatment and prevention of psychosocial dysfunction, disability
or impairment, including emotional and mental disorders. It is
based on knowledge and theory of psychosocial development, behavior,
psychopathology, unconscious motivation, interpersonal relationships,
environmental stress, social systems, and cultural diversity with
particular attention to person-in-environment. It shares with
all social work practice the goal of enhancement and maintenance
of psychosocial functioning of individuals, families and small
groups.

recommendation. The first must be from the applicant's
consultant and be written on forms provided by the Board
of Social Worker Licensure (Verification of Consultation
Form); the second recommendation must be from a LCSW,
a CSW-IP or a LMSW; and the third recommendation may be
from a LCSW, a CSW-IP, a LMSW, a Board Certified Psychiatrist,
Licensed Clinical Psychologist, Licensed Clinical Professional
Counselor, or an ANA approved Psychiatric Nurse.

Our Purpose
The State
Board of Social Worker Licensure was established to provide for
the regulation of persons offering social work services to safeguard
the public health, safety and welfare, to protect the public from
incompetent and unauthorized persons and to ensure high standards
of practice by social workers.
The primary
responsibilities of the Board is to evaluate qualifications, supervise
examinations of applicants, to grant licenses to those who meet
board requirements, investigate complaints, and take disciplinary
action; and to revoke or to refuse to renew any licenses after
proper notice and hearing.
