LSX - Licensed Social Worker, Conditional

Description

"Conditional License" indicates the licensee is completing a required internship period under certain conditions to progress to another level of licensure. A licensee must be licensed at this level while accruing required internship experience. This is an entry level requiring BS/BA and a LSW conditional must obtain four hours per month of supervision.

  • A completed Application for Licensure;
  • Documented proof of BS/BA degree. Documented proof may be in the form of a transcript indicating the degree has been awarded, or copy of diploma;
  • Three current (within the past year) letters of professional recommendation, two of which must be from licensed social workers(at anh level of licensure from any state);
  • Criminal History Record Check Form and separate $8.00 check.
  • Agreement to provide Consultation form.

LS - Licensed Social Worker

Description

"Licensed Social Worker" (LSW) is a person who has received a license as a Social Worker from the board. A LSW may: Conduct basic data gathering of records and specific life issues of individuals, groups, couples and families; assess the above data, formulate and implement a plan to achieve specific goals related to specific life issues; serve as an advocate for clients or groups of clients for the purpose of achieving specific goals relating to specific life issues; refer clients to other professional services; plan, manage, direct or coordinate social services; participate in training and education of social work students; and supervise other LSWs, other professionals practicing related professions and paraprofessionals engaged in related activities. A LSW with a BSW and two (2) years of supervised postgraduate experience may provide consultation required by the LSW Conditional licenses to those licensees

  • A completed Application for Licensure;
  • Documented proof of a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) degree from a Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) accredited program (transcript) or Documented proof of a BS/BA degree (transcript) plus documentation of 96 hours of consultation provided by an LCSW, CSW-IP, LMSW or an LSW with a BSW degree who has completed the required LSW consultation (Verification of Consultation Form). This consultation must be concurrent with 3200 hours of social work employment occurring in not fewer than 2 years nor more than 4 years;
  • Documentation of successful passage of the required examination (Basic). Documented proof may be in form of a copy of the results given to you on the day of the examination;
  • Three current letters of professional recommendation (within the past year), two of which must be from licensed social workers at any level of licensure from any state;
  • Criminal History Record Check Form and separate $8 check.

Checks should be made payable to Maine State Treasurer.

 

FOR APPLICANTS CURRENTLY LICENSED IN ANOTHER STATE

If you are currently licensed in another state and are applying for licensure in Maine, you must submit all of the required documentation (as listed above) as well as the items listed below:

A. A copy of the state or country licensure act under which the applicant is licensed;

B. A copy of the applicant's social work license;

C. A completed verification of licensure form.

LM - Licensed Master Social Worker

Description

"Licensed Master Social Worker" (LMSW) is a person who has received a license as a Master Social Worker from the board and only performs non-clinical functions. A LMSW may perform all of the functions of the LSW License, engage in administration, research, consultation, social planning and teaching related to the functions of social work; engage in non-clinical private practice; and provide consultation required by the LSW and LSW Conditional Licenses.

  • A completed Application for Licensure;
  • Documented proof of a MSW degree from a CSWE accredited institution. Documented proof may be in the form of an official transcript indicating that your MSW degree was been awarded;
  • Documentation of successful passage of the required examination (Intermediate). Documented proof may be in form of a copy of the results given to you on the day of the examination;
  • Three current letters of professional recommendation written within past year, two of which must be from LCSW, LMSW, or CSW-IPs or MSWS licensed in other states;
  • Criminal History Record Check Form and separate $8 check.

Checks should be made payable to Maine State Treasurer.

Note: You must apply for LMSW Conditional Clinical licensure in order to begin your clinical consultation toward LCSW licensure. No clinical consultation acquired outside LMSW Conditional Clinical licensure may be used towards LCSW licensure. (Exeptions see page 12 of the board rules)

MC - Licensed Master Social Worker, Conditional Clinical

Description

This license is for Master Social Workers who are engaged in clinical practice who have not yet completed the consultation hours required for LCSW (independant licensure).

"Licensed Master Social Worker, Conditional (Clinical)" means a person who has received an MSW Conditional (Clinical) license from the board. This licensee may perform all of the functions of the LMSW license; engage in psychosocial evaluation, including diagnosis and treatment of mental illness and emotional disorders, with required consultation; and provide clinical consultation to LSWs, Social Work students, other professionals practicing related professions and paraprofessionals engaging in related activities. A LMSW, Conditional (Clinical) must receive four (4) hours a month of consultation (no more than 25% in a group setting) by a LCSW while practicing social work in a clinical setting. A LMSW Conditional (Clinical) may not engage in private clinical practice unless permitted under 32 MRSA, Chapter 83, Section 7053, subsection 1.

  • Three current letters of professional recommendation written within the past year, two of which must be from LCSW, LMSW, or CSW-IPs or Master Social Workers licensed in another state;
  • Documentation on the form provided by the Board of intent to provide clinical consultation signed by the LCSW or CSW-IP engaged as the consultant (Agreement to Provide Consultation Form);
  • Criminal History Record Check Form and separate $8 check.

Checks should be made payable to Maine State Treasurer.

If Transferring from LMSW to LMSW Conditional Clinical, you must submit:

  • A completed Application for Licensure;
  • Three current letters of professional recommendation, two of which must be from LCSW, LMSW, or CSW-IPs;
  • Documentation on the form provided by the Board of intent to provide clinical consultation signed by the LCSW or CSW-IP engaged as the consultant (Agreement to Provide Consultation Form); and
  • Payment of a $25. Licensure Transfer Fee.

FOR APPLICANTS CURRENTLY LICENSED IN ANOTHER STATE

If you are currently licensed in another state and are applying for licensure in Maine, you must submit all of the required documentation (as listed above) as well as the items listed below:

A. A copy of the state or country licensure act under which the applicant is licensed;

B. A copy of the applicant's social work license;

C. A completed verification of licensure form.

Applicants who submit documentation of clinical licensure obtained prior to 1984 are not required to submit proof of having passed the examination. At its discretion, the Board may waive the requirement of Conditional licensure if the applicant has met the conditions for conditional licensure in another state.

LC - Licensed Clinical Social Worker

Description

"Licensed Clinical Social Worker" (LCSW) is a person who has received a license as a Clinical Social Worker from the board, and may engage in Clinical Social Work Practice: The professional application of social work theory and methods to the evaluation, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of psychosocial dysfunction, disability or impairment, including emotional and mental disorders. It is based on knowledge and theory of psychosocial development, behavior, psychopathology, unconscious motivation, interpersonal relationships, environmental stress, social systems, and cultural diversity with particular attention to person-in-environment. It shares with all social work practice the goal of enhancement and maintenance of psychosocial functioning of individuals, families and small groups.

REQUIREMENTS

  • A completed Application for Licensure;
  • Documented proof of MSW degree and transcript from a CSWE accredited program. Documented proof of MSW degree may be in the form of an official transcript indicating that the MSW degree has been awarded;
  • Verification of Clinical Internship (Verification of Consultation Form). Please refer to Chapter 3, Section 1(H)(3) of Board rules for further clarification;
  • Three current (within the past year) letters of professional recommendation. The first must be from the applicant's consultant and be written on forms provided by the Board of Social Worker Licensure (Verification of Consultation Form); the second recommendation must be from a LCSW, a CSW-IP or a LMSW; and the third recommendation may be from a LCSW, a CSW-IP, a LMSW, a Board Certified Psychiatrist, Licensed Clinical Psychologist, Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor, or an ANA approved Psychiatric Nurse.
  • Proof of passage of the required examination (Clinical). Documented proof may be in form of a copy of the results given to you on the day of the examination;
  • Criminal History Record Check Form and separate $8.00 check. Checks should be made payable to Maine State Treasurer.

Our Purpose

The State Board of Social Worker Licensure was established to provide for the regulation of persons offering social work services to safeguard the public health, safety and welfare, to protect the public from incompetent and unauthorized persons and to ensure high standards of practice by social workers.

The primary responsibilities of the Board is to evaluate qualifications, supervise examinations of applicants, to grant licenses to those who meet board requirements, investigate complaints, and take disciplinary action; and to revoke or to refuse to renew any licenses after proper notice and hearing.
