Respiratory Care Therapist

Description

Respiratory care means the therapy, management, rehabilitation, diagnostic evaluation and care, administered on the order of a physician or surgeon, of patients with deficiencies and abnormalities affecting the cardiopulmonary system and associated aspects of other bodily systems.

Application Information

FEES

  • Application fee: $25.00
  • License Fee: $135.00 - ($67.50 after May 1st of odd numbered years)
TERM
  • Biennial (2 years)
  • Cycle- April 30th even numbered year
REQUIREMENTS

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL APPLICANTS

  • Completed initial application to include:
    • Completed application and fees
    • Completed reference form
    • Verification of licensure
    • Notarized copy of NBRC card or Notarized Proof of successful completion of the NBRC exam
    • Written confirmation of applicant's credential from the NBRC
    • SBI form and separate check for $8.00 made payable to the Treasurer, State of Maine
    • Credit Card form, if desired.
  • EDUCATION
    • Be a graduate of an educational program for respiratory therapists/respiratory technicians which is recognized by the board and accredited by the American Medical Association in collaboration with the Joint Review Committee for Respiratory Therapy Education
  • EXAMINATION
    • Pass an examination as provided for in 32 MRSA §9709 of the Board's Law.

Renewal Information

FEES

  • Biennial renewal fee of $135.00
TERM
  • This license renews biennially on April 30 of even years.
REQUIREMENTS
  • Renewal applications received after the expiration date will require a late fee of $10.00.
  • An individual who submits an application for renewal more than 90 days after the license expiration date is subject to all requirements governing new applicants under this chapter, except that the board may, in its discretion and giving due consideration to the protection of the public, waive examination if that renewal application is made within 2 years from the date of that expiration. The ninety day extended renewal period should not in any way be construed to permit the practice of respiratory care after the date of expiration.
  • Applications for renewal are mailed approximately 30 days prior to the license expiration date to the last known address on file. It is the licensee's responsibility to keep the Board informed of his or her current mailing address.
  • CONTINUING EDUCATION - 30 hours of board approved continuing education must be submitted by December 31 of the renewal year. 15 hours of board approved continuing education must be submitted by December 31 of the renewal year if you were licensed in the second half of the biennium.

Temporary Technicians

Description

Respiratory care practitioner means a person licensed as a respiratory therapist or as a respiratory care technician under this chapter. Respiratory care means the therapy, management, rehabilitation, diagnostic evaluation and care, administered on the order of a physician or surgeon, of patients with deficiencies and abnormalities affecting the cardiopulmonary system and associated aspects of other bodily system.

No more than one temporary license may be granted to a person who has completed the educational requirements. This license allows the holder to practice respiratory care under the direct supervision of a respiratory care practitioner. This license shall be issued for a term of one year and may be extended for not more than an additional one-year period at the discretion of the board.

  • Notarized proof of graduation from an AMA accredited school for respiratory care · Letter from school confirming graduation from an AMA accredited school for respiratory care
  • SBI form and separate check for $8.00 made payable to the Treasurer, State of Maine · Credit Card form, if desired.

Respiratory Care Trainees

Description

Respiratory care practitioner means a person licensed as a respiratory therapist or as a respiratory care technician under this chapter. Respiratory care means the therapy, management, rehabilitation, diagnostic evaluation and care, administered on the order of a physician or surgeon, of patients with deficiencies and abnormalities affecting the cardiopulmonary system and associated aspects of other bodily system.

A respiratory care practitioner trainee shall not perform invasive procedures or procedures related to critical respiratory care, including therapeutic, diagnostic and palliative procedures. Respiratory care practitioner trainees shall only perform services under the on-site supervision of a licensed respiratory care practitioner

Associate Permit

Description

REQUIREMENTS

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

If an applicant is licensed in another state the following must be submitted:

  • Application
  • Verification of license in good standing from another state that has licensure requirements equivalent to the requirements of this chapter
  • At the time of application, the associate must report the dates and locations that the respiratory services will be performed in Maine, which may not exceed 30 days in a calendar year

If an applicant is certified or registered by the National Board of Respiratory Care and resides in a nonlicensure state the following must be submitted:

  • Application · Verification of being certified or registered by the National Board of Respiratory Care
  • At the time of application, the associate must report the dates and locations that the respiratory services will be performed in Maine, which may not exceed 30 days in a calendar year.

Our Purpose

The Board of Respiratory Care Practitioners was established to safeguard the public health and safety by protecting the public from incompetent and unauthorized conduct on the part of respiratory care practitioners in the State of Maine.

The primary responsibilities of the Board is to conduct examinations of candidates for licensure to practice respiratory care, to verify credentials of applicants, to license and to conduct hearings and investigations upon receipt of complaints, to revoke or to refuse to renew any licenses after proper notice and hearing.
