Description
of License
Limited
Interpreters/transliterators of American Sign Language and English
means a person licensed by the Department of Professional and
Financial Regulation who provides:
- English-based
transliterating, which includes but is not limited to conveying
a message by visual representations of English language such
as manually coded English and oral transliteration. This process
conveys information from one mode of English to another mode
of English;
- American
Sign Language-based interpreting, which is the process of
conveying information between American Sign Language and English;
or
- Intermediary
interpreting, which means interpreting services rendered by
a deaf interpreter to facilitate communication between another
deaf person and another licensed interpreter or between 2
or more deaf persons.

Proof Of Education & Training in American Sign Language.
Proof of completion of at least 100 clock hours of instruction
in American Sign Language (ASL) conducted by:
1.
An Instructor recognized by the ASL Teachers' Association
or a comparable or successor organization recognized by
the Commissioner;
2.
An Interpreter certified by either the Registry of Interpreters
for the Deaf, Inc. (RID) or the National Association of
the Deaf, Inc. (NAD) or a comparable or successor organization
recognized by the Commissioner;
3.
An Instructor of courses conducted through an accredited
college, accredited university or accredited or approved
high school or conducted by certification maintenance
course sponsors approved by the RID or the NAD or a comparable
or successor organization recognized by the Commissioner.
OR
Submission
of a letter attesting that the applicant's skill level
in American Sign Language is equivalent to a person who
has completed 100 clock hours of instruction in American
Sign Language prepared and signed by:
1. An Instructor recognized by the ASL Teachers' Association
or a comparable or successor organization recognized by
the Commissioner;
2.
An Interpreter certified by either the Registry of Interpreters
for the Deaf, Inc. (RID) or the National Association of
the Deaf, Inc. (NAD) or a comparable or successor organization
recognized by the Commissioner; or
3.
An Instructor of courses conducted through an accredited
college, accredited university or accredited or approved
high school or conducted by certification maintenance
course sponsors approved by the RID or the NAD or a comparable
or successor organization recognized by the Commissioner.
AND
Written
proof of completion of at least 100 clock hours of instruction
in the interpreting process. Written proof shall consist
of an official transcript issued by an institution of
higher education or certificate signed by the instructor
of a course given by an accredited college, accredited
university or accredited or approved high school or conducted
by certification maintenance course sponsors approved
by the RID or the NAD or a comparable or successor organization
recognized by the Commissioner.

fee or Credit Card authorization payment of $200 renewal
fee;
- Continuing
Education - All new applicants not currently registered
must complete at least 15 hours of annual continuing
education in American Sign Language or the interpreting
process at the time of renewal. Continuing education
is not required for those that were registered prior
to June 30, 2000 until after the licensee has demonstrated
compliance with the American Sign Language education
and training requirements. Proof of continuing education
must be submitted at the time of renewal.
- Completion
of criminal conviction question by indicating yes or
no, and submission of documentation that lists date(s)
and crime(s) and submit a copy of the court judgement(s).
If your answer is "Yes" you cannot file your renewal
application electronically. You must mail the completed
renewal application and the necessary fees along with
a copy of the court judgment. You must also submit a
letter listing the date of the conviction, the crime
committed, and explaining the circumstances surrounding
the conviction;
- A
late fee of $10.00 is assessed for registrations renewed
after the license expiration date; and
- A
person who submits an application for renewal more than
90 days after the registration expiration date is subject
to all requirements governing new applicants and is
required to reapply with original registration application,
documentation and fees.
