Description
"Dealer"
shall mean any person, duly licensed by the department, who engages
in the practice of fitting and dealing in hearing aids, or any
person who has a temporary Trainee Permit issued by the department
to engage in the practice of Fitting and Dealing in hearing aids.

| REQUIREMENTS |
All
applicants must have:
-
Obtained
a trainee permit pursuant to §1658-J and has received
a minimum of 750 hours of training the practice of fitting
and dealing in hearing aids under the direct supervision
of a licensee during a period of not fewer than 6 nor
more than 12 months;
-
Passed
the Board of Hearing Aid Dealers and Fitters Practical
Examination;
-
Passed
the National Institute for Hearing Instruments Studies
Written Examination (if applicable); and
All
applicants applying for licensure by Reciprocity ("Comity"
or "Endorsement") must submit the following:
-
A completed application with a recent photograph attached;
- Proof
of age. The Board will accept a copy of the applicant's
birth certificate, a copy of state driver's license, or
other state identification card providing the applicant's
date of birth and bearing a photograph;
- Two
(2) business reference letters indicating the applicant's
business attitude and ethics. Most recent employers are
preferred;
- Two
(2) character references not related to the applicant;
- Copy
of out-of-state license;
- Copy
of out-of-state licensing statutes and rules;
- Completed
Verification of Licensure Form (enclosed);
- Payment
of a separate $8. fee for a criminal records (SBI) check.
- Payment
of application and license fee.

license renews annually on
January 31.

| REQUIREMENTS |

Completed Application;
- A
late fee of $10. is assessed for licenses renewed after
the January 31 license expiration date.
- A
person who submits an application for renewal more than
90 days after the license expiration date is subject to
all requirements governing new applicants and is required
to reapply with an original license application, documentation
and fees.
- Renewal
applications are mailed approximately 30 days prior to
the license expiration date. It is the licensee's responsibility
to keep the Board informed of the current license address
and/or to see that the license is renewed.
- CONTINUING
EDUCATION - 8 hours of board approved continuing education
is required by November 30.

Description
Business
License - Any corporation, partnership, trust, association or
other like organization engaged in the business of selling or
offering for sale hearing aids at retail in the State shall apply
to the board for a license to engage in that business. No business
entity may so engage in the business of selling or offering for
sale hearing aids hearing aids without a license to do so.

- Documentation
of an education equivalent of a 4-year course in an accredited
high school;

Two (2) written business reference letters indicating
the applicant's business attitude and ethics. Most recent
employers are preferred;
- Two
(2) written character references not related to the applicant;
- An
alternative to the examination given by the Board as an
acceptable substitution for the written portion of the
examination is the ASHA examination for Clinical Competency
in Audiology. The passing score is 600. Please enclose
proof of passing the ASHA examination in Audiology;
- Payment
of a separate $8. fee for a criminal records (SBI) check.

Our Purpose
The Board
of Hearing Aid Dealers and Fitters was established to protect
the public by regulating the practice of selling and fitting of
hearing aids in the State of Maine.
The primary
responsibilities of the Board is to examine and license qualified
applicants for licensure; to ensure competency in the practice
of fitting and dealing in hearing aids and to revoke or to refuse
to renew any licenses after proper notice and hearing.
