Professional Counselor

Description

"Professional Counselor" means a person who, for a fee, monetary or otherwise, renders or offers to render to individuals, families, groups, organizations or the general public a service involving the application of principles and procedures of Counseling to assist those served in achieving more effective personal, emotional, social, educational, and vocational development and adjustment.

REQUIREMENTS
  • Completed and Signed Application Form.
  • Completed Criminal History Form (enclose separate check for $8.00 made payable to treasurer, State of Maine)
  • Official Transcript - forwarded directly to the Board by the academic institution holding the transcript. (If the transcript does not indicate the number of on-site internship clock hours, a letter from a school official documenting the number of clock hours in the internship will be required.) Applicant should also submit a course brochure/catalogue which describes courses. A course syllabus should be submitted, if the brochure/catalog does not adequately describe course content.
  • Completed Supervisor's Affidavit forms.
  • Reference Forms -- 3 forms to be completed by professionals in the counseling field.
  • Official proof of a passing score on an examination as prescribed in the Rules - forwarded to the Board directly by NBCC, or a request for examination.
  • A copy of your Disclosure Statement.
  • Education Worksheet for appropriate license applied for. You must attach a college catalog, description, or syllabus to substantiate the specific material included in each course listed on the worksheet.

  • A person who submits an application for renewal more than 90 days after the license expiration date is subject to all requirements governing new applicants and is required to reapply with an original license application, documentation and fees.
  • Renewal applications are mailed approximately 90 days prior to the license expiration date. It is the licensee's responsibility to keep the Board informed of the current license address and/or to see that the license is renewed.
  • CONTINUING EDUCATION - 55 hours of board approved continuing education is required 60 days prior to the renewal.

Clinical Professional Counselor

Description

"Clinical Professional Counselor" means a Professional Counselor who renders or offers to render for a fee, monetary or otherwise, to individuals, families, groups, organizations or the general public, a counseling service involving the application of the principles and procedures of counseling to assess and treat intrapersonal and interpersonal problems and other dysfunctional behaviors and to assist in the overall development and adjustment of those served.

Description

Pastoral Counselor

Description

"Pastoral Counselor" means an individual who is trained and certified to provide for a fee, monetary or otherwise, Pastoral Counseling, which is ministry to individuals, families, couples, groups, organizations and the general public involving the application of principles and procedures of Counseling to assess and treat intrapersonal and interpersonal problems and other dysfunctional behavior of a social and spiritual nature, and to assist in the overall development and healing process of those served.

Conditional Pastoral Counselor

Description

"Conditional License" means a license granted to an applicant for licensure who has met all the requirements for licensure as defined in Rule Chapter 2, Sections 1-4, except for supervised experience.

Our Purpose

The Board of Counseling Professionals Licensure was created to ensure that the public is protected by a common code of standards and ethics among those who represent themselves as professional counselors qualified to assess and treat interpersonal and other dysfunctional behaviors, and to assist in the overall development and adjustment of those they serve.

The primary responsibility of the Board is to examine and license qualified applicants to practice as professional counselors, clinical professional counselors, marriage and family therapists, pastoral counselors and registered counselors in Maine.
