Low Pressure Boiler Operator

Description

A Low Pressure Boiler Operator may operate a heating plant with steam boilers not exceeding 15 psi or hot water and hot water supply boilers not exceeding 160 psi or 250 degrees Fahrenheit, or both.

High Pressure Boiler Operator

Description

A High Pressure Boiler Operator may operate, supervise or have charge of a heating plant having a capacity of not more than 20,000 #/HR or operate or supervise a plant up to the capacity of the license of the engineer in charge of the plant in which the licensee is employed.

  • Applicants shall have six months experience as a high pressure boiler operator under a training permit issued by the Board.

Fourth Class Stationary Steam Engineer

Description

A Fourth Class Stationary Steam Engineer may have charge of a plant of not more than 50,000 #/HR or operate or supervise a plant up to the capacity of the license of the engineer in charge of the plant in which the licensee is employed.

  • Applicants must have one year operating experience as a holder of a high pressure boiler operator license to qualify to sit for the examination. Applicants who hold a valid Coast Guard license qualify for a Maine license in no higher grade than that which they hold without taking an examination.

Boiler Inspector

Description

A Boiler Inspector is a person employed by an insurance company authorized to insure against loss from explosion of boilers or pressure vessels in this State who inspects high pressure and low-pressure boilers and pressure vessels.

Welder

Description

A Welder is a person issued a certificate of authority by the Board as qualified to weld on boilers and pressure vessels in the State of Maine.

REQUIREMENTS
  • A Maine welder certificate of authority shall be issued to welders who have successfully passed a performance qualification examination and a written examination to permit the welder to make routine welded repairs.

  • Six-month renewal fee of $10.00

  • Based on a Welder's continuity on the particular welding process, the certificate may be renewed for additional six (6) month periods up to a total period of three (3) years. At the end of three (3) years, a welder shall be retested and, upon satisfactory completion, a new certificate will be issued.

Boiler Operator Training Permit

Description

A Boiler Operator Training Permit is issued for the purpose of gaining six months experience to qualify for the High Pressure Boiler Operator license examination. Such a permit is limited to a specified plant and limited for one year.

Our Purpose

The Board of Boilers and Pressure Vessels was established to preserve and protect the health of the people of the State of Maine by insuring the safe construction, installation, alteration, repair, use and operation of boilers and pressure vessels in the State of Maine.

The primary responsibilities of the Board are to evaluate qualifications of applicants, to administer examinations of applicants, to grant licenses to those who meet board requirements, investigate complaints and take appropriate disciplinary action.
