Architect

Description

Architect means a person licensed by the Department of Professional and Financial Regulation to use the title "architect" or to practice architecture after having met the requirements for licensing. Unless specifically exempted, a license is required to practice architecture in the State of Maine [reference 32 MRSA Chapter 3-A §226 "Exceptions"].

Application Information

FEES

  • Application fee: $125 if applying for approval to sit for Architect Registration Exam (ARE).
    $200 if qualifying for license through NCARB or reciprocity.
  • License fee: $ 60

  • Annual (1 year)
REQUIREMENTS

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL APPLICANTS

  • Completed application.
  • Affidavit certifying that applicant will not practice until issued a license.
  • SBI form and separate check for $8.00 made payable to Treasurer, State of Maine.
  • Credit Card Application if authorizing payment of fees by VISA or MasterCard.

REQUIREMENTS TO SIT FOR ARE THE:

  • TRANSCRIPTS showing completion of a course of study in a school or college accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board, the Canadian Architectural Certification Board or approved by the Board.
  • EXPERIENCE verification by way of record of completion of Intern Development Program (IDP) OR 3 yrs. practical experience approved by the Board.
  • PERSONAL INTERVIEW before the Board for the purpose of validating qualifications. Applicant will be asked to bring work samples representative of his or her experience.

REQUIREMENTS IF APPLYING BY RECIPROCITY WITH NCARB CERTIFICATE

  • NCARB RECORD to be submitted with application.

REQUIREMENTS IF APPLYING BY RECIPROCITY WITHOUT NCARB CERTIFICATE

  • TRANSCRIPT(S) showing completion of a course of study in a school or college accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board, the Canadian Architectural Certification Board or approved by the Board.
  • VERIFICATION OF LICENSURE from another state or foreign country in which applicant holds an architect license.
  • VERIFICATION OF EMPLOYMENT form documenting applicant's work experience.
  • PERSONAL INTERVIEW before the Board for the purpose of validating qualifications. Applicant will be asked to bring work samples representative of his or her experience

  • This license renews annually on June 30.
REQUIREMENTS
  • Renewal may be filed electronically using the electronic filing form attached to this page. Other methods of electronic filing are not acceptable.
  • A late fee of $10.00 is assessed for licenses renewed after June 30.
  • A person who submits an application for renewal more than 90 days after the license expiration date is subject to all requirements governing new applicants and is required to reapply with original license application, documentation and fees.
  • The Board may, at its discretion, waive the examination requirement for applicants applying for reinstatement within two years of the license expiration date.
  • Renewal applications are mailed approximately 30 days prior to the license expiration date. It is the licensee's responsibility to keep the board informed of the current license address and/or to see that the license is renewed absent the renewal application.

Landscape Architect

Description

Landscape Architect means a person licensed by the Department of Professional and Financial Regulation to use the title "landscape architect" or to practice landscape architecture after having met the requirements for licensing. Unless specifically exempted, a license is required to practice landscape architecture in the State of Maine [reference 32 MRSA Chapter 3-A §226 "Exceptions"].

    $125 if applying for approval to sit for Landscape Architect Registration Exam (LARE).

    $200 if qualifying for license through CLARB or reciprocity.
  • License fee: $ 60

REQUIREMENTS IF APPLYING BY RECIPROCITY WITH CLARB CERTIFICATE

  • CLARB RECORD to be submitted with application.

REQUIREMENTS IF APPLYING BY RECIPROCITY WITHOUT CLARB CERTIFICATE

  • TRANSCRIPT(S) showing completion of a course of study in a school or college accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board, the Canadian Architectural Certification Board or approved by the Board.
  • VERIFICATION OF LICENSURE from another state or foreign country in which applicant holds an architect license.

Certified Interior Designer

Description

Certified Interior Designer means a person certified to use the title "certified interior designer" after having met the requirements for certification.

Application Information

FEES

  • Application fee: None
  • License fee: $120
TERM
  • Biennial (2 years)
REQUIREMENTS

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL APPLICANTS

  • Completed application.
  • Affidavit certifying that applicant will not practice until issued a license.
  • SBI form and separate check for $8.00 made payable to Treasurer, State of Maine.
  • Credit Card Application if authorizing payment of fees by VISA or MasterCard.

REQUIREMENTS FOR ORIGINAL CERTIFICATION:

  • EDUCATION - Applicant must meet education/experience requirements as set by the National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ).
  • EXAMINATION - Each applicant must provide to the Board proof of passage of the examination administered by the National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ).
  • PERSONAL INTERVIEW - may be required to appear before the Board for the purpose of validating qualifications and present work samples representative of his or her experience.

REQUIREMENTS FOR APPLICANTS LICENSED IN ANOTHER STATE

  • All applications and forms required of original certification AND
  • VERIFICATION OF CERTIFICATION from another state in which applicant is licensed or certified as an interior designer

Our Purpose

The Maine State Board for Licensure of Architects, Landscape Architects and Interior Designers was established to protect the public and maintain high professional standards through examination and licensure of persons who wish to practice architecture, landscape architecture, and interior design in the State of Maine.

The primary responsibilities of the Board are to identify qualified applicants for licensure, to issue licenses and renewals to applicants who have met licensure requirements and to promulgate rules as necessary to establish standards and verify qualifications of applicants for licensure.
