Licensed Alcohol And Drug Counselor

Description

Licensed Alcohol & Drug Counselor means an individual licensed by the Department of Professional and Financial Regulation who is providing the service of professional alcohol and drug counseling to the public for a fee, monetary or otherwise, and who meets the criteria established in sections 6213 and 6214-A for a licensed alcohol and drug counselor.

  • Biennial (2 years)
  • Cycle - November 30 odd-numbered years
REQUIREMENTS

APPLICATION CHECKLIST FOR EXAMINATION

  • Notarized application
  • Copy of birth certificate, driver's license, or passport
  • Verification of supervised work experience:
    • 4,000 hours with Undergraduate Degree; or
    • 1,000 hours with Master's Degree
  • Two peer evaluations
  • One evaluation statement from present clinical supervisor
  • Original transcripts and or documentation of CEU's (please be sure this includes documentation of six hours or approved ethics training)
  • Copy of driving record from the Maine Division of Motor Vehicles (or appropriate agency if you are from another state)
  • Supervised practical training summary
  • $25.00 application fee (non-refundable) and $77.50 written examination fee (you may submit one check made payable to the Maine State Treasurer)
  • A written job description signed by your supervisor

ALL APPLICATIONS FOR THE WRITTEN EXAM MUST BE RECEIVED 90 DAYS PRIOR TO THE DATE OF THE EXAMINATION. THE EXAM SCHEDULE IS AS FOLLOWS:

Renewal Information

FEES

  • Biennial renewal fee is $150.00.
TERM
  • This license renews biennially on November 30
REQUIREMENTS
  • A late fee of $10.00 is assessed for licenses renewed after the November 30 license expiration date.
  • A person who submits an application for renewal more than 90 days after the November 30 license expiration date is subject to all requirements governing new applicants and is required to reapply with original license application, documentation and fees.
  • Renewal applications are mailed approximately 30 days prior to the license expiration date. It is the licensee's responsibility to keep the Board informed of the current license address and/or to see that the license is renewed absent the renewal application.
  • Continuing Education - 50 contact hours of continuing education is required 90 days prior to the November 30 renewal.

Registered Alcohol And Drug Counselor

Description

Registered alcohol and drug counselor means a practitioner registered by the Department of Professional and Financial Regulation who provides the service of professional alcohol and drug counseling to the public for a fee, monetary or otherwise, who does not engage in private practice and who meets the criteria established in sections 6213 and 6214-A for a registered alcohol and drug counselor.

  • Registration Fee: $75.00 ($37.50 after November 30 of even-numbered years)
TERM
  • Biennial (2 years) Cycle - November 30 odd-numbered years
REQUIREMENTS
  • Completed and signed application by applicant and by supervisor
  • License fee of $75.00 ($37.50 after November 30 of even-numbered years)
  • Copy of facility license
  • A written job description signed by your supervisor

The State Board of Alcohol and Drug Counselors was established to ensure high professional standards among alcohol and drug counselors which promotes quality treatment and rehabilitation services of substance abusers.

The primary responsibilities of the Board are to evaluate applicant qualifications, examine applicants, grant licenses to those who meet board requirements, investigate complaints, and take appropriate disciplinary action against licensees.
