Certified Public Accountant

Description

A Certified Public Accountant is a person licensed by the Board of Accountancy to perform or offer to perform, for a client or potential client, services involving the use of accounting or auditing skills. Accounting or auditing skills include the issuance of reports on financial statements, management advisory or consulting services, the preparation of tax returns and the furnishing of advice on tax matters.

REQUIREMENTS

The State of Maine is a two-tier licensing state. Candidates must first apply for and receive a Certificate by meeting the educational, examination and work experience requirements prior to applying for a Permit to Practice.

REQUIREMENTS
  • A late fee of $10.00 is assessed for licenses renewed after the license expiration date.
  • Any person who submits an application for renewal more than 90 days after the expiration date shall be subject to all requirements governing new applicants.
  • CONTINUING EDUCATION
    • An applicant for renewal shall show that requirements of continuing education consisting of not less than 20 hours in each one-year period and not less than 120 hours in any 3-year period have been fulfilled.

Accountancy Firm

Description

All firms which provide accounting services for which a license is required pursuant to the law, to clients with principal offices in this State, must be licensed in Maine, regardless of whether the firm itself is located in this State.

  • Any individual who is responsible for the conduct of any engagement to deliver service for which a license is required pursuant to the law, to clients with offices in this State, shall be deemed to regularly work in this State.

Our Purpose

The Board of Accountancy was established to protect the public through regulation of the practice of public accountancy in the State of Maine.

The primary responsibility of the Board is to examine, certify and register qualifying applicants for a certificate to practice public accounting in the State; to revoke, suspend or refuse to renew any registration permit after proper notice and hearing; to promulgate rules of professional conduct; and to provide to the public information pertaining to licensed Certified Public Accountants, Public Accountants and Firms registered by the Board.
