Is your well water safe to drink? Many Maine wells have too much Arsenic, Radon and Uranium. The Bureau of Health recommends a yearly test for Bacteria, Nitrates and Nitrites. The Bureau of Health additionally recommends a test for Arsenic, Uranium, Radon, First Draw Lead and Fluoride every 3 to 5 years. The State of Maine Health and Environmental Testing Lab (HETL) is now providing secure online water and Radon Air testing kits in addition to telephone inquiries.
The HETL is certified by EPA, the State of Maine and by the National Laboratory Accreditation Program for drinking water testing. Water testing can also be provided by certified private laboratories located in Maine listed below. Contact these labs to determine their individual ordering procedure. Laboratories are certified by test (examples: Arsenic, Bacteria, Radon), so it is necessary to check with a laboratory to find out exactly what they test for. The tests which laboratories are able to do, can change regularly. You may confirm what tests are done by a laboratory or ask any other questions regarding laboratory quality by calling (207) 287-1929 or by emailing the certification officer at matthew.sica@maine.gov.
Are you a water testing company and would like to be added to this list? Please email the certification officer.
